Researchers continually find more health benefits of maintaining sufficient Vitamin D levels. From staving off things like tuberculosis and even cancer, Vitamin D is being dubbed an essential “miracle” nutrient.

There are telltale signs you’re Vitamin D deficient. Things like hair loss, bone pain, and mood swings, can indicate you’re lacking in Vitamin D, but there are also signs you should know that tell you your body is suffering from inflammation.

A new study of almost 250,000 people published in the International Journal of Epidemiology observed an association between Vitamin D deficiency and chronic inflammation. Those in the study with less than a 25 serum level were immensely more likely to have inflammation in their body. The study also concluded that correcting low Vitamin D can correct inflammation.

If you think you’re suffering from inflammation, but you’re struggling to keep your Vitamin D levels up, there could be a variety of reasons your serum levels won’t elevate. If you are suffering from Hypovitaminosis D, it could be because:

  • You don’t receive enough natural sunlight to maintain sufficient D levels year-round. This could be because you live in a region that doesn’t receive much sunlight or you’re primarily indoors during the day.
  • If you get enough sunlight during the day, you could fall under one or more categories to be at risk for Vitamin D deficiency. Things like being obese or having dark skin can make it harder for your body to synthesize Vitamin D.
  •  If you’re primarily using supplements to maintain your Vitamin D levels and you’re not seeing results, you could have malabsorption problems. If your body has trouble digesting supplements, you will be unable to raise your serum levels this way.
