I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in April of this year after I lost vision in one of my eyes and was admitted to the hospital Iwith extremely low vitamin D levels. I was told I needed to increase my vitamin D levels and keep them in the optimal range or I would be living with an increased risk of having an MS relapse and/or further progression of the disease. After I was discharged from the hospital, I started taking 50,000 units of vitamin D a week orally, but after a few months, my vitamin d levels were still not in the normal range. I had to spend 15 mins a day outside almost everyday, sitting in the midday sun, in shorts and a tank top, without sunscreen, for an additional 3 months (in additions to the 50,000 units a week pills) in order to finally get my levels in the optimal range. At this point, it was almost fall and getting cold and I was very scared of how I would avoid a detrimental drop in my levels over the winter and risk a relapse. This is when I decided to purchase a sperti lamp. It arrived quickly and safely packaged. I’ve been using this UVB lamp regularly since buying it in July or August, and it definitely has had a noticeable positive effect on my health and wellbeing, likely due to correcting a serious vitamin D deficiency.
The most astonishing result has been that the swelling of a lymph node on the back of my neck completely subsided after being various levels of swollen for 5+ years, which I believe was related to a chronic scalp infection which also drastically improved while using this light. Vitamin D supplements never did that for me, even at doses as high as 10k iu per day, and I’m not sure they ever did much for me to begin with, other than giving me abdominal pain.
I have also noticed that my sleep is significantly better on the days I remember to use the light — now I become naturally drowsy and fall asleep quickly like I used to, and I sleep all the way through the night for a decent amount of hours rather than waking up after 4 or 5 hours of restless sleep like before; plus improved dream quality and recall.
Other than that: Most of my brain fog has dissipated, and I generally have more energy and initiative than I did before. And my lower eyelid has almost completely stopped randomly twitching after 5+ years, though this was a later result and might be more related to getting more potassium in my diet; but I have had adequate potassium in the past without the same result, so I think the vitamin D deficiency must have played some role in that previously.
After doing some research and reading various discussions about it online, I didn’t follow the provided schedule (5 min 3x/week) for the first couple months, as I was sure I had a severe deficiency from mostly staying indoors for 4+ years and needed some serious help. After feeling substantial improvements in my health in response to regular usage of the light, I lowered my exposure to the recommended amount for maintenance, and this seems to be working well. Maybe that was a stupid and reckless thing to do, I don’t know, but I have played fast and loose with the southern sun many times in the past, which is much more powerful than this lamp, so I felt relatively comfortable adding time via exposure to different body sections (i.e. 5min torso, 5min back, 5 min butt and thighs) and additional sessions for a couple months. I understand and accept that this almost certainly voids the warranty, and I will need to buy replacement bulbs sooner… worth it!
I haven’t been to the doctor to get anything tested so I don’t know if I actually have adequate levels of vitamin D or not, but I feel much better than I did before getting the light. I have been and will continue to recommend this light to anyone who can afford it, especially in my city where there are very few sunny days and many people work and spend most of their free time indoors. I will also be purchasing one or two more as Christmas/birthday presents for family.

I purchased the Sperti unit after hearing Thomas Delauer’s talk about how lamps are better than supplementation for raising Vit D levels. I’ve been supplementing for years, which brought me from a level of 18 to 50, but could never get my level any higher, so I was eager to try out his method of swapping my daily topical 50,000iu supplement for the lamp. (For me, the topical worked much better than any oral supplement.) For six months now I have been using the lamp as directed. Yesterday I got my test results back from Labcorp indicating that my Vitamin D levels were exactly the same as when I started. For me, the lamp is working just as well as the topical. Now I’m going to add my topical supplement back in and keep using the lamp. Will test and update again in six months.

I used this lamp over the last 2 winters to help with my vitamin D levels. I do feel better in the winter also using this lamp. You can use it every other day, but I usually use it twice a week during the winter and maybe once a week when it’s not winter. I do feel like I get sick less in the winter also. Start slow, it will burn you. Do not stand too close or go over the amount of time.

I have had Sperti lamps for many years. They have long been the go-to company in the alternative health world for Vitamin D lamps. The lamps are durable, and they provide excellent customer service when needed (bulbs, goggles etc). They provide a very intense level of UVB light as confirmed with a solarmeter. While a lamp cannot replace the sun, these lamps are an excellent supplement to regular sun exposure and are an excellent option (really the only option) for people who want to generate Vitamin D naturally from their skin but live in low UV climates.
