Sun Exposure and Skin Types

Getting sun exposure on a regular basis is important for our body’s health but it is important to know your skin and how it is going to react after being outside. There are 6 different skin types that all react differently to sun exposure.

Skin Type I – Pale white – Always burns, never tans

Skin Type II – White to light beige – Burns easily, tans minimally

Skin Type III – Beige – Burns moderately, tans gradually to light brown

Skin Type IV – Light brown – Burns minimally, tans well to moderately brown

Skin Type V – Moderate brown – Rarely burns, tans profusely to dark brown

Skin Type VI – Dark brown or black – Never burns, tans profusely

Darker skin contains more melanin which makes it less likely to get any type of sun burn. Melanin basically acts as a natural sunscreen, so with darker skin it can also be harder to get vitamin D absorption. For someone with skin type 5 or 6, it may be necessary to get higher amounts of UV exposure in order to get your vitamin D levels up.

Wearing sunscreen is very important in order to protect your skin from getting too much UV exposure. Especially for skin types 1-3, spending too much time in the sun can cause painful burns to the skin which can end up causing more serious and long-term damage. Protecting your skin is important in order to prevent things like skin cancer, wrinkles and sun spots.

While sunscreen is extremely important, it is also a good idea to get direct UV exposure to the skin in order to get the vitamin D needed to keep your body healthy. Constantly wearing sunscreen will block all UV rays from your skin which can help protect it but it will also stop your body from absorbing the necessary UVB that gives us vitamin D. It is crucial to find a good balance of bare UV exposure and protected exposure to insure that your body and bones are as strong as can be.

Using a Sunlamp to give you safe UV exposures from the comfort of your own home is a great way to get vitamin D or the tan that you desire. All Sperti Sunlamps have a built in timer so that you can only use them for the recommended amount. After the clinical study and all of the testing that was preformed on these lamps, the recommended exposure times were determined to be the perfect safe and effective amount of exposure (5 minutes for the Vitamin D Lamp and 15 minutes for the Fiji Sun Tanning Lamp). While UV exposure is important, safety should always come first.

Sun Exposure and Cognitive Function

Spending time out in the sun is not only fun, but it also has a great impact on our bodies and lives. As recent study found that people with higher levels of sun exposure on a regular basic tend to have higher cognitive function. Cognitive functions can be defined as: cerebral activities that lead to knowledge, including all means and mechanisms of acquiring information. These functions include reasoning, memory, attention, and language. In order to live the best, most active life possible, we need to have these cognitive functions at their highest ability.

Not only is it important to spend time out in the sun as a child but also as an elder. As we get older, we tend to lose our memory, attention span and ability to reason – these are all directly related to our cognitive functions. Spending time outside during peak sunshine hours (will vary depending on your location) is more important than we thought!

Benefits of At-Home Tanning

The Fiji Sun Tanning Lamp is the only FDA approved at-home tanning machine that is currently sold in the US. This lamp is perfect for getting the tan you desire from the comfort of your own home. With this lamp, you simply expose your skin to it for 12-15 minutes every other day. After just a few exposures, you can be on your way the tan that you’ve been hoping for!

With the ability to get UV exposure at home, you won’t have to worry about booking an appointment or driving across town just to get some color. You can just set this unit on your bathroom counter or any other flat surface, set the timer and flip the switch. You are on your own schedule and can use the lamp whenever works best for you. No more monthly memberships to those dreaded spray tan and tanning bed salons.

Keep in mind that a tan is not instant. When you first start using the lamp, you will begin with short exposure times and then gradually increase over the first couple weeks. This is a safety precaution in order to avoid any type of over exposure symptoms like redness or dryness of the skin. Once you get into using the lamp for the full 12-15 minute sessions (depends on your skin and how sensitive you are), this is when you will really start to see the difference.

Oral Supplement Overdose

When it comes to raising vitamin D levels, getting UV exposure directly to the skin is the best. When we get vitamin D through the skin, our bodies naturally stop absorbing it when we get to a certain level. This is the body’s way of avoiding any type of vitamin overdose. The same can not be said for oral supplements. It is possible to get your vitamin D levels too high and it can have some serious side effects.

It is very rare, but vitamin D can build up in the body and reach levels that can be toxic. More commonly, when vitamin D levels get too high you can experience side effects like:

  • Too much calcium in the blood
  • Nausea
  • Digestive distress (vomiting)
  • Kidney Failure

These are just a few of the symptoms that can occur from getting too much vitamin D. It can be beneficial to get vitamins both through the skin and orally, but you need to make sure that you are seeing a doctor on a regular basis to observe and maintain your levels.

How Does Vitamin D Help Your Body?

Millions of people around the world are vitamin D deficient. We all know that it is not healthy to be low in vitamin D, but what does it actually do for our bodies?

We must have vitamin D in order to help our body absorb calcium. Without vitamin D, our bones can become soft and brittle – you could even develop a condition known as osteomalacia. It has been known that having the proper vitamins in your system can help fight against diseases like cancer, heart disease and diabetes. When your body is low in vitamin D, it could also impact your mental health. With low energy and mood, depression becomes very common for those suffering from a D deficiency.

If your body has the proper amounts of vitamin D, it can aid in things like weight loss/decreased body fat, strong bones and teeth and even muscle strength. It is very important to get vitamin D any way that you can. The most effective way to raise your levels is by getting UVB exposure to the skin, but it is also a good idea to eat vitamin D rich foods. It is recommended to consult your doctor if you are deficient so that they can help you build a plan to raise your levels to a safe range.

Is Vitamin D Deficiency Connected to Obesity and Impulsivity?

In the past, studies have found a connection between low vitamin D levels and obesity. Now, new studies are linking vitamin D deficiency with impulsivity as well. As many of us know, impulsive behaviors like comfort food eating and snacking are well known for having an effect on out weight but could being vitamin D deficient make these behaviors worse? Here is what a blog posted by the Vitamin D Council has to say: “One study showed that many obese children were vitamin D deficient. Another study found that patients who supplemented with 100,000 IU per month lost nearly 12 pounds and 5.48 cm around the waist.”

Fragile Shipments

Our sunlamps are all packaged extremely well with foam on either side and protection over the fragile bulbs and even though the boxes are marked as ‘Fragile’ the shipping companies don’t always handle them with care. If the package was thrown around a lot during the shipping process, the bulbs may have shifted or the filament may have settled. When you receive your sunlamp, if it is not turning on right away, simply follow these few steps to get your lamp working perfectly again.

  1. The first thing you’ll want to do is make sure that the cord in the back of the unit is fully inserted into the unit and plugged into a working outlet. Also, make sure the timer is turned on any time you are turning the sunlamp on.
  2. Now you will need to check and see if all of the bulbs are fully installed. If any of the bulbs have shifted out of their socket, it can cause the unit to not turn on. To know if a bulb is in the correct position, just check to see if the label on the bulb is facing straight forward. If one or more bulbs has turned, simply grip the bulb and gently twist it back into place – you should feel the bulb ‘lock’ into place. When the labels on all 4 bulbs are pointed straight ahead, then they should all be installed correctly.
  3. Since our sunlamps and the bulbs in them are brand new and have never been used, the filament in the bulbs may have settled which can cause them to flash or not turn on at all. In order to get the bulbs to turn on, you can follow these ignition instructions in order to get surges of power through the bulbs to clear out all of the filament:
    • Turn the timer to 2 minutes
    • Flip the on/off switch once every 1 second until the unit has turned on and off at least 10 times (flip switch on, wait 1 second, flip switch off, wait 1 second, flip switch on, etc.)
    • Once all 4 bulbs fully light up, make sure to continue to turn the unit on and off another 3-4 times to insure that all of the filament is fully cleared.

Once you have followed all of these steps, your sunlamp should be turning on with ease. If you ever have any other questions or concerns, give our office a call and we would be happy to help: 800-544-3757

Lifespan of a Bulb

For all Sperti sunlamps, the bulbs have a lifespan of 1,000 usage hours. This means that these bulbs can last your for years and years!

It is very important to keep track of how long and how often you use your sunlamp. After the bulbs have been used for 1,000 hours, there is a chemical change which causes them to become less effective. If you do not know how many hours your lamp has been used, there is not really an easy way to test the bulbs. You would need a special machine in order to sample the bulb’s UV output in order to see if it is still in a good, effective range. Since these machines are not easy to come by, the best way to test the effectiveness of your bulbs would be to simply use your sunlamp. After a couple weeks of use, you should be able to tell if you are getting the desired effects or not.

Once you are ready for new bulbs, you can order them directly from Sperti.com or by contacting our customer service office at: 800-544-3757
